Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Kitchen Supervisor, this position entails participation in the preparation and serving of meals at the Ford County Jail. Meals are planned and prepared from a predetermined menu and must follow a certain mandate. This position requires some evening and weekend work.

Essential Function Statement(s)
Ability to read recipes and directions. Ability to use kitchen equipment safely, following an established protocol. Prepare and portion foods, utilizing food surpluses and leftovers. Aware of the number of servings to be made from any vegetable, meat, beverage, and dessert to control portion costs. Maintain cleanliness of kitchen and equipment. Assist in inventory, storage, and distribution of foodstuffs and supplies. Comfortable with inmates as coworkers.

Position qualifications
Possess a valid Kansas Drivers License Pass a post-offer/ pre-employment drug screen Communication, Oral and Written- Ability to communicate effectively with others using the spoken word and proper writing style in all communication vehicles.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
Experience: Two years of some type of food preparation or service is helpful.
Education: High School diploma or equivalent is required.
Skills: Safe handling of knives, hot pans, and liquids.
Problem Solving: Minimal problem solving exists in this position. Appropriate substitution of menu items or ingredients may be required occasionally.
Decision Making: Minimal decision making exists in the position. Decisions are made by the Supervisor following predetermined processes and plans.
Accountability: Employee is not responsible for budgetary control of the department and does not participate in the annual budget process.
Supervision: The employee does not supervise subordinate staff and must be able to act without direct supervision according to established protocol and procedures. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Kitchen Supervisor and job performance is reviewed for results through reports, inspections, and instructions.
Personal Relations: Contact with County staff, inmates and Vendors requiring the ability to communicate and relate in a positive and effective manner.
Working Conditions: Position requires indoor work with heat-producing appliances and large pans and occasion contact with inmates.
