Machine Learning Engineer (Information Technology)

HORNE, one of the largest accounting and consulting firms in the Southeast, is seeking an individual who is energized by helping organizations navigate the next wave of innovation and change.  The Machine Learning Engineer (MLE) will be responsible for productionizing machine learning applications and systems at scale. The MLE will be responsible for comprehensive technical design, development, and implementation of machine learning applications various technology platforms. Your focus will be on machine learning architectural design, development, review of model code, Ops, and ensure performance of our machine learning applications.  You will be joining a collaborative, cross-functional team that values your insight, encourages you to take on new responsibilities, promotes continuous learning, and rewards innovation.  We are seeking someone with a knowledge of building next-gen capabilities on scalable and secure enterprise-grade platforms.  You will collaborate with relevant business and technology partners across the firm to design and implement new applications using the latest tools and methodologies in machine learning.   

 

Key Responsibilities 

The MLE job duties include, but are not limited to: 

• Design next-gen solution architecture utilizing native cloud services on leading providers (AWS, GCP, and/or Azure) using various architectural concepts and approaches. 
• Collaborate with cross-functional product teams to design and release new features. 
• Lead solution design, feasibility assessment, and technical optimization that results in production deployment and explore opportunities to expand or accelerate cloud services. 
• Design, build, and/or deliver ML models and components that service business/client needs 
• Make ML infrastructure decisions using your understanding of ML modeling techniques and issues, including choice of model, data, and feature selection, model training, hyperparameter tuning, dimensionality, bias/variance, and validation). 
• Solve complex problems by writing and testing application code, developing and validating ML models, and automating tests and deployment. 
• Collaborate as part of a cross-functional Agile team to create and enhance software that enables state-of-the-art big data and ML applications. 
• Retrain, maintain, and monitor models in production. 
• Leverage or build cloud-based architectures, technologies, and/or platforms to deliver optimized ML models at scale. 
• Construct optimized data pipelines to feed ML models. 
• Leverage continuous integration and continuous deployment best practices, including test automation and monitoring, to ensure successful deployment of ML models/app code. 
• Ensure all code is well-managed to reduce vulnerabilities, models are well-governed from a risk perspective, and the ML follows best practices in Responsible and Explainable AI. 
• Code in programming languages like Python, Scala, or Java. 
• Participate in code reviews to ensure code quality and adherence to coding standards. 
• Troubleshoot and debug software issues, identify bottlenecks, and propose solutions. 
• Stay up to date with emerging technologies and industry trends. 
• Partner with product management to design and deliver right-fit solutions for customers. 
• Build and maintain strong relationships and feedback loops with leaders and stakeholders. 
• Communicate to appropriate stakeholders in a clear, accurate, and timely manner 
• Ability to think outside of the box 
• Other tasks that may be required to complete project requirements 
• Position may require travel 

Required Qualifications 

• Four (4) to seven (7) years' experience in Python, Scala, or Java 
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or STEM field 
• At least 3 years of hands-on real business experience with an industry recognized ML frameworks (scikit-learn, PyTorch, Dask, Spark, or TensorFlow) 
• Demonstrated experience designing, productionizing, monitoring, and maintaining models 
• Experience developing and deploying ML solutions in a public cloud such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform 
• Extensive experience connecting to various data sources and structures: APIs, NoSQL, RDBMS, Hadoop, S3, Blob Storage, etc. 
• Deep understanding of statistical modeling as well as data ingestion/cleansing methods 
• 1+ years of experience building, scaling, and optimizing ML systems 
• 1+ years of experience with data gathering and preparation for ML models 
• 2+ years of experience developing performant, resilient, and maintainable code 
• 3+ years of experience with distributed file systems or multi-node database paradigms 
• 3+ years of experience designing, implementing, and scaling complex data pipelines for ML models and evaluating their performance 
• Experience with performance tuning and scaling for enterprise-grade 
• Able to work independently and in team environments 

 

Preferred and Additional Considerations 

• Experience building AI-embedded software applications 
• Contributed to open-source ML software 
• Authored/co-authored a paper on a ML technique, model, or proof of concept 
• Master's or doctoral degree in computer science, electrical engineering, mathematics, or a similar field 

 

 

This position is remote, with occasional travel to meet organizational or client needs.
