The position works closely with and under the supervision of the Office of Student Affairs' (OSA) Assistant Dean for Student Affairs (ADSA) at the University of Houston Law Center to develop and manage programming focused on promoting mindfulness and peak performance (collectively, "wellness") for the approximately 1,000 students enrolled at the Law Center. The position will conduct intake for students experiencing crisis and/or wellness concerns and maintain a regular schedule of student appointments to help improve overall student wellness.
Given the position's deep involvement with students and wellness, a master's degree in social work, psychology, or a related field is required. Given the position's interactions with legal phenomena and systemic operations within the Law Center, applicants with a Juris Doctorate will be thoughtfully considered. Additionally, given OSA's heavy administrative load and the position's duty to contribute to OSA administrative tasks, experience in the following areas is highly preferred: customer service; record-keeping; data management and tracking; and event management and programming.
The position's primary responsibilities are as follows:
Collect, maintain, and analyze information related to student needs and wellness and provide reports and recommendations for improvements as needed.
Maintain a regular schedule of student advising and counseling meetings related to wellness in law school and during bar-preparation.
Identifying student wellness needs and developing and managing targeted programming, which may include stress-relieving events during final exams, regular mindfulness sessions, and volunteer opportunities.
Collaborate with faculty, staff, and other Law Center leaders including the leadership positions traditionally held by tenured full professors, the Dean and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, to effectively manage student emergencies, crisis, and other wellness matters.
With the ADSA and OSA staff, oversee planning, logistics and operation of numerous large and small student events, such as commencement and entering student orientations.
Perform other job-related duties as required.
