Ophthalmology Surgical Scheduler - Ophthalmology (Finance)
UTHealth Houston Ophthalmology is hiring a Surgery Scheduler to join their team of professionals. The Surgery Scheduler will be responsible for acting as an effective liaison between the patient, surgeon, referring physicians, and hospital in all aspects of preoperative preparations; answering all telephone inquiries from patients, their families, or primary care physicians concerning surgery and/or related concerns; scheduling all patient surgeries; providing clear instructions for the patient regarding surgery; scheduling all preoperative appointments for patients with their primary care provider and scheduling any labs as needed when surgery is decided; and more. Previous Ophthalmic scheduling experience is a plus!

Responsible for the coordination and management of the physician schedules for office-based procedures and outpatient surgeries; works with systems, physicians and team members to appropriately schedule complex services. Ensures patients are aware of procedures and surgery processes and that staff and facilities are ready for the procedures or surgeries.
Position Key Accountabilities:
1. Act as an effective liaison between the patient, surgeon, referring physicians, and hospital in all aspects of preoperative preparations.
2. Schedules all patient surgeries and provides clear instructions for the patient regarding surgery.
3. Edits the surgeons order, as necessary, for correct facility, date of procedure, and proper CPT/ICD-10 codes. Organizes charts and collects all pertinent information for upcoming surgery, such as postings, lens orders, insurance and medical clearances.
4. Schedules all preoperative appointments for patients with their primary care provider and schedules any labs as needed when surgery is decided.
5. Answers all telephone inquiries from patients, their families or primary care physicians concerning surgery and/or related concerns.
6. At least one week prior to surgery, ensures all surgery paperwork is completed including making sure the technicians have calculated IOL measurements, pre- and post-operative orders are completed as well as following up on surgical dictation.
7. Obtains consent signatures for surgery and provides the patient with the estimated cost of care charges. Must make periodic check of account receivable to confirm payments.
8. One to two days before surgery, contacts the patients with arrival time, pre-operative instructions and reminds them of any changes in their medications.
9. Performs other duties as assigned.
Certification/Skills:
Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with patients, co-workers, management staff and Physicians.
Minimum Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Minimum Experience:
One (1) year of related experience. Previous scheduling experience in a healthcare environment is highly preferred. May substitute required experience with equivalent years of education beyond the minimum education requirement.
Physical Requirements:
Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.

Residency Requirement:
Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
